How Lingo works

Each word fills the screen. There is no clutter, no account and no feed of other people. Just the words.

Swipe to discover

Swipe up for the next word and down to go back. Words you've already seen don't keep coming back.

Tap to flip

The front shows the meaning and pronunciation. Flip it for an example sentence, the origin, a fun fact and the emoji people often use with the word.

Make it yours

Like or dislike words to shape what you see next, and save the ones you want to remember.

Filter what you see

Choose from 19 topics and the age ranges of the people who typically use a word, from teen slang to retro classics. Strong language is hidden unless you turn it on.

Themes

Pick from 20 themes, light or dark. Keeping a new theme means watching a short ad, and you get a clear confirmation when it is unlocked.

Share a word

Turn any word into a full-screen image in your theme with both sides of the card. Save it to Photos or send it anywhere.

Search any word

Heard something you don't get? Look it up in seconds, or search your saved words.

Word of the day

Turn on a daily notification with a new word. It's off until you choose it.

Start over

Seen every word? Start over and go through them again. Your likes and saved words stay.

Written with care

Every definition and example is written for Lingo. Origins and fun facts only appear when they're well supported. If the history of a word is uncertain, we leave it out instead of guessing.

Private by design

There's no sign-up. Your likes, saved words and settings stay on your iPhone. Ads are provided by Google AdMob and are always clearly labeled. Read the privacy policy.

A note on content

Slang includes swear words and sexual references. Lingo explains them in a neutral, dictionary-like way. Age ranges in the app describe who typically uses a word, not who the app is for. Words with swearing or sexual references are hidden by default.
