Lingo: Discover Slang · Effective 29 September 2026

In short
  • Lingo has no accounts, and we (Klein Design) don't collect or receive any personal data from the app.
  • Your likes, saved words, filters, theme and viewing history are stored only on your iPhone.
  • The app shows ads from Google AdMob. Google collects some data to show and measure ads, as described below.
  • Lingo asks for your permission before Google may use your device's advertising identifier. Ads work the same whether you allow or decline.

1. Who we are

Lingo is published by Klein Design, Odense, Denmark (“we”, “us”). For questions about privacy, contact kleindesigngrafik@gmail.com.

2. Data stored on your device

To make the app work, Lingo stores the following on your iPhone only. It is never sent to us, and we can't see it.

WhatWhy
Likes and dislikesTo show you more or fewer words like the ones you reacted to
Saved wordsSo you can find them again in Settings → Saved
Age-range and topic filtersTo show only the words you chose
Your confirmed themeTo keep the app looking the way you chose
Viewing history (which words you've seen and when, and whether you interacted with them)To avoid showing you the same words again
Whether you've completed the introductionSo it isn't shown every time
“Hide strong language” settingTo hide words with swearing or sexual references if you choose
Word of the day setting and timeTo send the daily notification only if you turned it on
Whether you've been asked to rate the appSo Apple's rating prompt is shown only once

This data stays until you delete the app. Deleting Lingo removes it from your device. Depending on your iPhone settings, it may be included in your own device backups, which are handled by Apple under your Apple Account.

3. Sharing a word

When you tap Share, Lingo creates an image on your device and opens the standard iOS share sheet. The image goes only where you choose to send it. We don't receive it. If you choose “Save Image”, iOS asks for permission to add the image to your photo library. Lingo can only add photos and can't see your other photos.

3a. Notifications

If you turn on Word of the day, iOS asks for permission to send notifications. The notifications are scheduled on your iPhone and contain a word from the app. No data is sent to us or to a notification server. You can turn them off in Settings → Preferences or in the iOS Settings app.

4. Advertising (Google AdMob)

Lingo is free and funded by ads. Ads are provided by Google AdMob, a service of Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC. Static image ads appear between words in the feed. If you choose to keep a different theme, you watch a rewarded ad, which may be a video. Ads are always labeled.

To deliver, measure and protect ads, Google's Mobile Ads SDK may collect:

  • your IP address, which may be used to estimate your general location
  • device and advertising identifiers
  • information about the ads you see and interact with
  • app performance and crash information

Google processes this data under its own policies, which describe how long it keeps the data and how you can ask for it to be deleted. We only work with third parties, like Google, that commit to protecting your data at least as well as described in this policy. See How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy.

App Tracking Transparency. After the consent form (where it applies), Lingo shows Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. If you choose “Allow”, Google may use your device's advertising identifier (IDFA) to show more relevant ads and measure them across apps. If you choose “Ask App Not to Track”, the identifier isn't shared and you'll see less personalized ads. You can change this at any time in your iPhone's Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.

Your choices

  • EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland: before ads are requested, Lingo shows Google's consent form. You can accept, decline or customize how your data is used for ads. You can change your choices at any time in Settings → Privacy choices.
  • Everywhere: you can limit ad tracking in your iPhone's Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking, and reset or limit advertising settings in iOS.
  • Reporting ads: you can hide and report an ad from the ad itself.

5. Legal basis (GDPR)

Data stored only on your device is needed to provide the features you use. For ads, Google relies on the consent you give in the consent form where that's required, and otherwise on its legitimate interests as described in its policies. You can withdraw consent at any time in Settings → Privacy choices.

6. What we don't do

  • We don't run our own analytics or tracking in the app.
  • We don't sell personal data.
  • We don't have accounts, profiles, messaging or user-generated content.

7. Children

Lingo explains real-world slang, including swear words and sexual references, and is not directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children. The age ranges shown in the app describe who typically uses a word, not who the app is for.

8. Contacting us

If you email us, we use your email address and message only to reply to you. We keep the conversation for as long as needed to help you and then delete it.

9. Your rights

Because we don't hold any personal data from the app, there is usually nothing for us to access, correct or delete. The data on your device is under your control. For data processed by Google for ads, you can use your consent choices in the app or contact Google. You're always welcome to write to us, and you can complain to the Danish Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet) or your local authority.

10. Changes

If we change how Lingo handles data, we'll update this page and the effective date above. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's update notes.
